The 11th International Conference on Oriental Carpets (ICOC) took place in Istanbul from April 19 to 23, 2007, bringing together nearly 600 participants, including scholars, collectors, dealers, and enthusiasts from around the world. As one of the most significant events in the field of Oriental carpets, the conference provided a unique opportunity to explore the historical and cultural richness of these textiles while engaging in academic discussions and exhibitions.
The academic program was comprehensive, featuring 16 sessions that covered a wide array of topics, from the study of Central Asian textiles to the role of carpets in archaeology and their connections to European culture. Experts and scholars presented research on various subjects, shedding light on new findings and interpretations in the world of carpets. The discussions reflected the evolving interest in the intersection of art history, material culture, and textile traditions.

Beyond the lectures and presentations, the conference offered an impressive series of exhibitions that highlighted the artistic and historical significance of carpets, kilims, and textiles. Approximately 800 pieces were displayed across multiple venues in Istanbul, including the Vakiflar Carpet Museum, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, and private galleries. These exhibitions provided an opportunity to admire rare and exceptional examples of woven art, some of which had never been publicly displayed before.
One of the defining aspects of the ICOC was the immersive experience that Istanbul itself provided. As a city historically connected to the carpet trade, Istanbul offered a fitting backdrop for the event, allowing attendees to explore its vibrant bazaars, historical sites, and museums. Special exhibitions and dealer fairs ran alongside the conference, allowing collectors and dealers to engage in discussions and transactions.
For many attendees, ICOC Istanbul 2007 was more than just a conference—it was a celebration of the enduring legacy of Oriental carpets and a chance to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for this field. The event successfully combined scholarship, commerce, and cultural appreciation, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
It will be hard to achieve such a level on forthcoming conferences.
